Martha Graham Study Day
Course Details:
The morning will focus on the technique and look at examples of Martha
Graham’s work. In the afternoon, following a warm-up and creative tasks,
Graham’s influence on the modern dance repertory in the UK will be
considered.
Teachers will be able to adapt the information and practical material from the
day for different levels of teaching.
BTEC teachers will find the exercises and longer movement phrases useful
when teaching the new ‘Contemporary Dance’ units.
This one day intensive course will include:
- A Graham-based technique class including: consideration of characteristics such as the use of breath, contraction/release, spirals, opening of the leg, long stretch, pleadings, plies, brushes, knee vibrations and spiral turns
- Summary of characteristics of the technique
- Graham’s background and works
- Warm-up and creative tasks
- Influence of Graham on the modern dance repertory in the UK, considering in particular the works of choreographers Robert Cohan, Christopher Bruce and Robert North.
